Biographie

The editors of Sports Illustrated would have liked Wiff Miles as a hockey referee because he was living proof that the sport was at its best when the rules were applied consistently and tenaciously by a no-nonsense official. Several years ago a column in the Telegraph-Journal was headed “Nobody But Wiff Really Cares!”This was written at a time when, almost single-handedly, he worked to elevate the quality of hockey officiating in New Brunswick to the point that, in his own words, “it was the best in the nation.” He held meetings, ran workshops and clinics, handled hundreds of games, supervised, pleaded, drafted constitutions and by-laws, and even established his own association to achieve that improvement. Many believe that hockey has survived in part because of his efforts and successes. Inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 4, 1989.
